LGBT+ Pride House will be set up in St Petersburg for Russian World Cup

Despite Putin’s anti-LGBT “propaganda” laws and without any government funding – though with the aid of international governments – a Pride House will be set up in St Petersburg for LGBT+ tourists coming to view the FIFA World Cup. FIFA has expressly warned gay soccer fans not to hold hands in public in Russia and a recent survey of Russian people has found that 39 percent believe LGBT+ tourist will be attacked, and 13 percent are resentful of them for coming to Russia.

Activists have heavily criticised FIFA for choosing Russia as a host country for the 2018 World Cup – and for choosing an equally unfriendly Qatar for the 2022 games. The outrage has forced FIFA to change its guidelines for host countries, they must now prove “there is no discrimination of any nature.”

Attendees are assured that the World Cup will be similar to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where Putin said LGBT+ visitors could feel “at ease” as long as they “leave the children in peace.”
