LGBTQ+ Allyship: 5 Tips That Make a Difference

By Jeff Larger, Director, Oncology – Pacific Northwest Region at Gilead

1. Golden rule: treat everyone with kindness and respect, especially the LGBTQ community

2. Create spaces and opportunities at the table for the LGBTQ+ community to share their voices; a community which is traditionally underrepresented in executive leadership.

3. Acknowledge the importance of different perspectives. Listen and learn from folks who may have different insights based on their identities and ask questions when appropriate. It's the best way to develop as an ally.

4. Consistently and appropriately show up for the community. Whether it be at community events, forums, or celebrations, let it be known that you are there to support and offer a helping hand when appropriate.

5. Continue to advocate for groundbreaking biomedical interventions. Continue to support the work and effort of those working in to prevent HIV by having critical conversations on a daily basis and raising awareness regardless of your background.
