“Listen to Your Child and Support Their Individual Choice”: Nicola Tempest-Hall on Parenting

Interview with Nicola Tempest-Hall, Financial Advisor with Leaze Financial Services

Hi Nicola! Thanks for chatting with us. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi, I’m Nicola, and I am currently a financial adviser with Leazes Financial Services.

To start with, can you tell us about the highlights from your parenting journey?

Watching your children achieve milestones and appreciating that they do this in their own time with your support is an amazing feeling. We have three children, and they are all very different. I love their different personalities and watching them grow. I’m very proud of them all.

Have you had any challenges along the way?

As a parent, there are many. Answering random questions from both my children and their friends, helping with homework (which always seems more difficult than when I was at school), being able to let go is sometimes very difficult as they get older and less reliant on you too.

What advice would you give to an LGBTQ+ first-time parent?

The same advice I would give to all parents. Enjoy every minute because children grow up so quickly!

What advice would you give to a parent whose child has come out?

I’d say encourage open conversations. Listen to your child and support their individual choice. You are the most trusted person in their world and can impact their confidence (positively or negatively) with your actions.

Have you had any difficulties in the workplace as an LGBTQ+ parent?

I’ve had great workplace experiences in retail and financial services and have found organizations very inclusive. I’ve felt that I have been offered the same opportunities and policies as other parents.

What workplace policies are important to you?

To me, it is important to feel included and valued. Workplace protection policies applied fairly and consistently help individuals enjoy the same treatment and opportunities as the rest of the workforce.

What advice would you give to people in the workplace who want to be allies for LGBTQ+ parents in their organization?

Treat everyone the same regardless of sexual orientation and challenge inappropriate behavior by others.
