Local veteran calls for rainbow flag to be taken down in Veterans Park

In a show of support for Pride Month, a Veterans Park in a small Maine town raised the rainbow flag alongside the American flag, POW/MIA flag, and Maine’s state flag. John Mixon, a local veteran, has raised such a fuss over the issue a town meeting is now being called to discuss the flag.

Despite many U.S. veterans being members of the LGBT+ community, Mixon said it had no place in the park, calling it “a travesty.”

“I was absolutely shocked,” Mixon told WMUR9. “I couldn’t believe that someone was even considering it.”

Town manager Pat Finnigan said that while they are planning a town meeting, there are no plans to remove the flag. “The rainbow flag represents that we have a significant number of people who come to Ogunquit partly because of our welcoming nature to gay people, and we want to recognize their contributions to this town.”
