Lunar New Year 2022: Celebrating The Year of The Tiger

This Lunar (Chinese) New Year, we celebrate the Year of the Tiger. The Tiger is the third animal in the Chinese zodiac, after the Rat and Ox.

Associating creatures with the Chinese calendar began in the third century B.C., and became firmly established by the first century A.D. The 12 animals, in sequence are: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.

According to legend, Tiger was confident that no one could compete with its speed and vigor for the celestial race that would decide the order of the zodiacs. However, when Tiger climbed out of the river, thinking it was first, it was informed that Rat actually secured first place for its cunning; and Ox was ranked second for its diligence. This left the king of the jungle having to settle for third place, as explained in the video below.

Each sign in the Chinese zodiac is believed to embody certain traits that are manifested in the personalities of people born in that year. People born in a year of the Tiger are characterized as brave, heroic, resolute, and vigorous.

Tigers are also competitive, unpredictable, and confident; yet they are very charming and well-liked by others. They can also be impetuous, irritable, and overindulgent. Tigers are known to be confident, with very strong personalities. Famous People Born in the Year of the Tiger include Queen Elizabeth II, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bear Grylls, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Malorie Blackman and Alec Guinness.
