Malaysian Tourism Minister Says Gay People Don’t Exist in Their Country
Datuk Mohamaddin bin Ketapi, the tourism minister for Malaysia, has said gay people don’t exist in his country, reports Deutche Welle.
The minister made the comment when replying to a question about whether Malaysia was safe for gay people to visit. “I don’t think we have anything like that in our country,” he said.
He then quickly changed the topic to the country’s “natural beauty and welcoming culture.”
Homosexuality is illegal in the country, with Prime MinisterMahathir Bin Mohamad leading an alleged crackdown on the LGBT+ community.
“Sometimes Asians accept Western values without questioning. We should be free not to change our values according to their wishes,” he said last October.
“At this moment, we do not accept LGBT, but if they [the West] want to accept, that is their business. Don’t force it on us.
“The institution of marriage, the institution of the family has now been disregarded in the West. Why should we follow that? Our value system is as good.
“If [the West] one day decided to walk around naked, do we have to follow?”
