Native American and Out Lesbian Wins Congressional Primary in Red State

Sharice Davids, an Native American and out lesbian, has won a congressional primary in the traditionally conservative state of Kansas.

The win has the potential to make history, as she now faces off against Republican incumbent Kevin Yober. If she wins against Yober she will become Kansas’ first openly gay representative, and the first Native American to ever serve in the US Congress.

“I keep saying how surprised I am that we’re in 2018, and we’re still having all these firsts,” she said to Wassaja, a web series following Native American hopefuls to congress.

The win would be even more surprising as it comes after Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer signed a bill into law last May allowing adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex parents.
