Nepal Celebrates Its First Pride
Nepal celebrated its first Pride event on Saturday (June 29) in the capital city of Kathmandu, reports theHimalayan Times.
While the country has celebrated the LGBT+ community with previous marches and parades, this is the first time an event has been held during Pride month.
This event was organised by the Queer Youth Group (QYG) and the Queer Rights Collective.
An annual Pride event is held during the festival of Gaijatraand is organised by the Blue Diamond Society. Gaijatra is a flamboyant festival that celebrates the recently deceased and includes colourful costumes and make up.
Many local activists have been wanting to hold their own Pride celebration independent of Gaijatra.
“There has always been a romanticisation of Nepal as being one of the more tolerant countries in Asia; however, the ground reality is very different,” said Transgender campaigner and QYG member, Rukshana Kapali.
The laws are not actually implemented making it more difficult for our community.”
