Ottawa Mayor has Come Out As Gay

58-year-old Jim Watson, longtime Ottawa Mayor, has come out as gay.

In a column in the Ottawa Citizen the Mayor, who has led the capital city of Ontario since 2010 and from 2997 up to 2000, wrote about the announcement that it was “better late than never”.

Watson says he had long struggled with the decision to be open about his sexuality.

"As I look back over my life, and in hindsight, not coming out sooner was a big mistake on my part," he wrote.

His announcement came just before Ottawa’s Capital Pride 2019.

Watson also states: "But if I can be so bold as to offer one bit of advice to those still in the closet: Don't feel pressured or rushed to come out, but don't wait 40 years either," he wrote. "My reluctance has not allowed me to live my life as full of love and adventure as my gay friends who were bolder and braver than I ever was.”
