Overwhelming Majority Of Generation Z Trans People Only Come Out Online
New research conducted by Tinder into Generation Z attitudes towards LGBT+ people has revealed that 78 percent of trans people have only come out online, remaining closeted in real life.
The research has come a year after the dating app introduced its orientation feature, allowing daters to pick up to three sexual orientations, to find better matches.
Generation Z, described in the Tinder research as 18 - 25 year-olds, are the most likely to use the feature, most likely to include more than one sexual orientation and more likely to use more than one gender descriptor.
As ‘National Cyber Security’ reports, of the 3,453 Generation Z Tinder users surveyed just 13 percent said they had come out to family and friends with a huge 78 percent stating they are open about their identity online, but not with people in their real lives. 41 percent of those who identify as gender fluid are also open about there identity online but not in real life.
At the same time, one third of Generation Z Tinder users surveys, one third said they have become more open to dating different genders within the last three years while one fifth said they would explore polyamory.
The survey also revealed that 43 percent of the people surveyed stated they needed better education and guidance on LGBT+ issues, while more than a quarter use TV and movies to educate themselves, and almost one third educate themselves through social media and influencers.
Tinder’s orientation feature is available in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, India, Australia and New Zealand, with the dating app stating it will soon be rolling out the function globally.
