Parents Of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Teens Are Less Supportive Than They Were 20 Years Ago, Research Shows
Parents of lesbian, gay and bisexual teens are less supportive of their LGBT+ teens than they were 20 years ago, new research published by the ‘Journal of Child and Family Study’ has shown. At the same time, the study shows that parental support has increased for heterosexual youth.
“This increasing societal acceptance really doesn’t filter down to youth who are still in school, who are still being discriminated against or victimized by their classmates,” says the report’s co-author Hilary Rose. “And it doesn’t trickle down to parent-child relations. Frankly, we were surprised by that.”
She added that “Parental support is a huge protective factor for sexual minority youth. It helps them deal with victimization at school, for instance. But if they cannot even count on parental support, you have to wonder, what are these kids going to do?
“We know that interventions such as parenting programs can help parents who initially reject their LGBT teens learn to accept them,” she says. “So in addition to basic research, we need to develop programs to help parents be more supportive of their children — all of their children.”
