Poland’s LGBT+ Politicians, Celebrities and Activists Lip Sync to Taylor Swift to Fight Homophobia

140 of Poland’s leading LGBT+ politicians, activists and celebrities took part in a viral YouTube video lip syncing to Taylor Swift’s anti-homophobia song ‘You Need to Calm Down’ to fight growing anti-LGBT+ attitudes in the country.

The video includes the Deputy President of Warsaw, Paweł Rabiej, party leader and European Parliament member Robert Biedron, Top Model winner Radek Pestka, model Romek Gelard, Mr. Gay Poland Lukasz Sabat, drag queen Kim Lee and many other journalists, activists and TV stars.

“We didn’t have any money but had a huge will to do [the video], so we asked LGBT people to record their own videos and send them to us,” said Jakub Kwiecinski, who organised the video.

“The response was overwhelming — we got 350 videos! Considering the huge scale of homophobia in our country,  these were 140 brave people.”

Recent months have seen hate crimes at Pride events, “LGBT-free zone” stickers being displayed in businesses, and the Polish president openly discussing a ban on “gay propaganda”.

“We did it for fun but also to draw world’s attention on LGBT+ rights in our country,” added Kwiecinski.

“That’s why video ends with two boards where we inform people about the huge scale of homophobia in our country.”
