Renée Zellweger On Being An LGBT+ Ally
Talking to Pink News, Renée Zellweger shares her stories of attending London Pride, when she decided to become an LGBT+ ally and the first time she went to a gay bar.
This year was the first time Zellweger attended London Pride.
“I’d been to [Pride] in America, in Palm Springs, quite a few times but it was ages ago – and white parties,” she says.
“I went to London Pride for the first time this year and it was thrilling – absolutely thrilling.”
About when she decided to become an LGBT+ ally she stated:
“I was 17 and I had a friend who wanted to change his name and his father was quite cruel to him,” she explains.
“I didn’t understand because he was so special and such a lovely person that anyone could find any reason not to be anything but proud of being related to him and wanting to celebrate him.
“He just didn’t want to be who his father wanted him to be, you know. And that should be OK. I mean, at the very least that should be OK.
“And then the rest of it was, you know, it seems like we have better things to worry about today than who people love.”
When asked when she first went to a gay bar Zellweger answered:
“The first time I went to a gay bar? It’s happened a lot,” she tells.
“It would’ve been – and let me do the math and this is horrendous because I’m revealing way more than I want to – it would’ve been 1986.
“I would’ve had to snuck out and stayed out all night, much to the chagrin of my mum who might be watching this now.
“Sorry mum,” she jokes.
