Rise in Anti-Trans Legislation Negatively Impacts LGBTQ+ Employees’ Mental Health, Confirms Study

September 1, 2023

The rise in anti-trans legislation is having a negative impact on the majority of LGBTQ+ workers' mental health, according to a new US study carried out by co-working space Mossier and The Coven.

The survey, which explored the experiences of queer and gender-expansive employees and what they need from their employers, revealed that 84% of LGBTQ+ employees feel that the rise in anti-trans legislation is negatively impacting their mental health. It also found that more than half (52%) of transgender and gender-expansive employees, said that the rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is also having an impact on their ability to do their job.

Around 50% of employees who work for companies that are not supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, said they are considering changing roles or companies, compared to 20% of those working in supportive organizations. The findings also revealed that 60% of transgender and gender-expansive workers fear their status will negatively impact their ability to get a new job. Unsurprisingly, around, 40% of trans and gender-expansive workers are considering leaving their company due to a lack of meaningful response to anti-LGBTQ+ regulations.

As more local and state governments introduce discriminatory, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, these statistics show that employers need to start taking actionable steps to support LGBTQ+ and gender-expansive employees, especially if they want to retain this valuable talent pool. Organization support for the LGBTQ+ community is vital for not only staff retention, but also for peak job performance and productivity.

On a positive note, three-quarters (75%) of employees surveyed felt that their workplace is welcoming of LGBTQ+ employees. Additionally, 79% of workers say mental health support with therapists who specialize in working with LGBTQ+ people is a top priority for their organization.

The study, focused on the experiences of women, trans, and non-binary people at work, with more than 2,000 respondents across the US, including 920 LGBTQ+ and 210 gender-expansive testifiers. Click here for more information about the study.
