George Ward, known professionally as performer Cherry Valentine, has passed away aged 28.
His family described his death as a “profound shock”, releasing a statement sharing their deep sadness: “It is with the most heart-wrenching and deepest sadness to inform you that our George - Cherry Valentine - has tragically passed away.

“As his family, we are still processing his death and our lives will never be the same. We understand how much he is loved and how many lives he has inspired and touched. All we ask is for your patience and your prayers in this time. We love you Georgie. 30 November 1993 - 18 September 2022.”
In 2015, George Ward qualified as a mental health nurse before starting his drag career. Cherry Valentine appeared on the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2021, and later fronted the 2022 BBC documentary Gypsy Queen And Proud, focusing on the community he grew up around.
Their tragic passing comes as a shock to many fans. Singer and presenter Jack Remington expressed his condolences on Twitter, referring to the work Cherry Valentine achieved “both as a nurse, and as representation for the gypsy community.”
Journalist Emma Kelly also spoke of Cherry's achievements as someone "who worked in the NHS through the pandemic, was proud of their gypsy roots, and looked phenomenal while doing it all."
As well as frequent public performances including Manchester Pride, Cherry also featured in music videos for musicians such Charli XCX.
