San Francisco airport terminal to be named after Harvey Milk

A terminal at the San Francisco airport is set to be renamed after LGBT+ hero Harvey Milk. Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the US. He was assassinated in 1977, just a year after he was elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors.

Plans to honour Milk in such a way have been circulating the last five years, originally with a proposal to rename the whole airport after him. City supervisors Hillary Ronen and Jeff Sheehy put forward legislation yesterday to rename the terminal. Ronen has also proposed that the terminal feature artwork memorialising him.

The legislation states: ‘In order to honor one of the nation’s great gay leaders, raise awareness of the history of the LGBT movement, and give hope to young LGBT people in cities everywhere, the Board of Supervisors finds it fitting that a terminal at the San Francisco International Airport be named in honor of Harvey Milk,’

David Campos, a former city supervisor who first proposed the change five years ago tweeted his approval: “Thank you @HillaryRonen @jeffsheehysf for supporting the effort to name SFO Terminal 1 after Harvey Milk. In the age of Trump, it is critical to remember Harvey’s legacy.”
