Sex and the City star launches campaign for Governor

Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award-winner Cynthia Nixon has announced her campaign for Governor of New York. Perhaps best known for her role as Miranda Hobbs in the Sex and the City series, Nixon announced her campaign today with a powerful video.

If elected she would not only be the first openly gay governor of the state but the first woman to ever serve in the role. She is running against current Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primaries and is working with key strategists Bill Hyers and Rebecca Katz. She has long been a vocal and outspoken opponent against Cuomo’s policies.

In a speech to the Human Rights Campaign she made last year when accepting a Visibility Award, she foreshadowed her campaign: “If we’re going to get at the root problem of inequity, we have to turn the system upside-down. We have to go out ourselves and seize it. This is a time to stick our necks out, to remember where we came from. This is a time to be visible. This is a time to fight.”

In her new video, she reiterates these points: “Our leaders are letting us down. We are now the most unequal state in the entire country, with both incredible wealth and extreme poverty. Half the kids in our upstate cities live below the poverty line. How did we let this happen?

“I love New York. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else, but something has to change.”
