Simple Tips for Supporting Someone When They Come Out

Today marks National Coming Out Day, an important date in the calendar to discuss the challenges that still exist around coming out. When it comes to coming out, the barriers that exist are complicated and personal - plus, coming out is never a one-off but something that LGBTQ+ people do throughout their life. There are however, many things that allies and peers can do to make coming out journeys easier.

Jake Prodoehl from Sanofi has put together his tips for supporting someone coming out to you - whether this is a colleague, friend or peer, lead with kindness and keep in mind these simple tips:

1. If someone comes out to you, thank them for trusting you.  There is a reason they confided in you – they respect you, feel comfortable around you, and value your relationship.

2. Challenge homophobic/transphobic remarks and/or jokes in public and private spaces.

3. Ask about confidentiality and reassure them of your confidence.  Make sure they know they can trust you.

4. Treat them the same you always have.  Assure them that nothing changes between you two.

5. Respect and share pronouns (he/him, she/her, they/their, other)

I know firsthand how transformative life can be after you accept and love yourself for who you are. Coming out is not easy, but I promise you it is worth it. Breathe, surround yourself with those who love you, and know that your life is about to change for the better. You have a community of LGBTQ+ persons and allies who will love and support you no matter what, and I promise you will be ok.
