South Carolina moves to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth: the impact and reactions

The South Carolina House, led by Republican lawmakers, has recently passed a bill that effectively bans gender-affirming care for transgender youths. The measure, known as House Bill 4624, prohibits the provision of gender transition procedures for people under the age of eighteen.

The bill also forbids the use of public funds for gender transition procedures and mandates that public school staff and officials cannot withhold knowledge of a minor's perception of their gender from their parents. Following this approval, the proposal is set to move to the Senate for further consideration. The chair of the Medical Affairs Committee in the Senate has indicated that the bill will receive attention.

The passing of this bill has sparked strong reactions from LGBTQ+ activists and medical professionals. The American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina has criticized the decision, stating that the House's actions do not prioritize the protection of youth.

Dr. Deborah Greenhouse, a pediatrician with over 30 years of experience in Colombia, has spoken out against the bill, emphasizing the lack of evidence linking mental health issues to transgender identity. She posted on social media platform X to express her concerns.

“Open message to trans youth in SC, and to those who care for or about them: I’m sorry that the SC legislature is using you as a pawn. ⁠But know that 5 SC paediatricians stood up to oppose H4642 and to protect you. No paediatricians stood up to defend this bill.”

In response to growing concerns about the impact of such measures, 22 states have already enacted similar restrictions, as conservative lawmakers continue to focus on issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly concerning healthcare and sports participation.

The approval of this bill in South Carolina and the ongoing discussions around similar measures in states like Missouri underscore the continued interest among conservative lawmakers in addressing LGBTQ+ issues. The proposal, once passed, would make South Carolina one of the few Southern states without legal provisions for gender-affirming care for minors.

The bill would restrict health professionals from performing gender-transition surgeries and hormone treatments for individuals under eighteen and would also limit the use of Medicaid to cover the costs of such care. Moreover, it would require school employees to inform the legal guardians of a student's transgender identity.

Research has consistently demonstrated the increased risk of stress, depression, and suicidal behavior among transgender youth and adults who are not supported in their gender identity. Children under 18 in South Carolina do not undergo gender-transition surgeries, and hormone treatments are only administered after extensive consultations with healthcare professionals. Those advocating for gender-affirming care stress its potential for saving lives and enabling young transgender individuals to lead more fulfilling lives.
