State Street UK Pride: Highlights

State Street UK Pride initiated/marked the following days via virtual events, initiatives, and blogs to raise awareness among staff members whilst advocating inclusion and diversity. We also addressed certain topics with takeaways for individuals to act on whilst considering maintaining good mental health and well being of themselves and others.

The following highlights some of the work conducted in this space:

2021

February

To mark LGBT History Month under the theme; Body, Mind & Soul, SS UK Pride along with the Street’s Mental Health Network (SHINE) and Race & Ethnicity (REN) networks launched the “challenge calendar”. For each day of the month, we encouraged staff to cook a healthy meal / eat fruit & veg, practice mindfulness, exercise, take a work call on the move, take part in a community event (learn about local charities), read LGBTQ+ literature / watch LGBTQ+ program and promoted the internal wellness sessions to name a few.

As part of the month-long initiative, we held a keynote virtual event in which 3 panellists discussed the aspects of combining LBGTQ+ awareness & education along with mental health and wellbeing. Also, as part of the session, we had a senior internal manager who is a Mindfulness Practitioner, and he held a 15-minute introduction mindfulness session for those in attendance. We also had the pleasure of our health and wellness coach in attendance alongside our UK Country Head who provided tips and tricks to keep us on track throughout the year.

May

Last year’s theme for IDAHOBIT was “Together: Resisting, Supporting, Healing”. UK Pride were pleased to invite staff to join an interactive session, in which several committee members shared their personal experiences of coming out, along with their life experience stories. These life experiences covered how negative interactions with our gender identity impacted us, how we overcame them and explained how our relationships with our loved one’s v’s at the time are now coming out. We also had Pride Allies take part on the panel who covered the reason why they are allies and rallied the cause of being supportive as an ally.

October

To mark National Coming Out Day, I shared my personal coming out story via a video recording to ELOP. ELOP are an East London Mental Health and Holistic Charity supporting a wide range of support services to the youth of East London. This enabled the charity to use the video with their youth workshops by using my personal story of coming out to my family & friends v’s my current situation i.e., married to my husband, fantastic relationship with my family and comfortable under my own skin.

November

To wrap the year up, UK Pride, REN and SHINE, joined forces and launched the #onekindword campaign for Anti-Bullying Week. Staff were encouraged to thank others, and be aware of their behaviours and conduct. The network leads recorded a conversation with our head of EMEA Compliance discussing conduct, inclusive language, and accountability, from both employees and State Street’s view in relation to Diversity & Inclusiveness

2022

February

SS UK Pride Joined forces with our UK Professional Women’s Network which we compiled a blog to mark Children’s Mental Health Week. We collated support organisations to which parents can refer to in times of requiring support for their children in addition to the support services provided by State Street.

A wide range of external organisations were listed:

Children's Mental Health Week (childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk)

Kindness teaching resources (redcross.org.uk)

Children's Mental Health Week - School of Kindness

City parents - The Work Life Specialists

Plus LGTBQ+ specific:

Young Minds is a mental health charity supporting young people’s mental health. Not only do they have resources for the young, but they also provide resources for parents. Their goals include providing children with tools to look after their mental health whilst empowering adults to support children with everyday life and the world we live in.

Place2beis a children’s mental health charity that provides counselling and mental health support and training in UK schools, using tried and tested methods backed by research.

The Anna Freud Centre supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex young people. They offer a wide range of services and there is a lot of information available on their site.

The Proud Trust conducts a lot of work for the younger generation and adults supporting them in supporting their sexual identity. The trust also covers faith & religion in addition to staying safe

Children First based in Edinburgh provide support information and support to parents of LGBTQ children.

March

SS UK Pride again under a joint effort multiple network initiative marked Zero Discrimination Day which was on the 1st of March. At a very level, we provided an internal bulletin detail of the firm's Speak Up line which is a confidential service that staff can use to report to raise concerns along with internal policies that are in place to help protect staff from inappropriate behaviours or language. A link to pathway training was provided whilst encouraging staff to have a D&I goal within their annual performance priorities/goals.
