Mental Health Matters: Maintaining A Healthy State of Mind Throughout 2022

With the ongoing pandemic continuing to impact our work-life balance, maintaining a healthy state of mind will be vital in 2022. Roya Shahilow, Head of HR – UK at Synechron, shares her top tips on how to look after your mental health throughout the year.

Mental health is really important to me. As we have all experienced, it has been a challenge to maintain healthy habits over the last few years, with all of the changes and new ways of life that we have had to adapt to. Personally, I have a few methods to try to maintain a healthy state of mind. These include the following:

1. Takings regular breaks – this can be difficult especially while working from home where everything seems to blur into one! However, to ensure I manage to take breaks, I try to block time off within the day which is off limits. For example, even if I am back to back on calls, I will always book a slot for lunch. That way, even if it’s just a short break away from the screen, I am able to get a bit of down time. If I have time, I will take a quick walk outside too which really helps to clear my head and come back refreshed to start again.

2. Here at Synechron, we are really passionate about mental health and have run a number of ‘Wellbeing Webinars.’ At one of these, I learnt a really good technique if I am ever feeling stressed which is the 5 senses technique. This is where you should go for a walk and think of 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This helps to bring your perspective back to the present and not overthink things.

3. I also think it’s really important to get some “me-time” so I block two hours out of my schedule every week to do personal training sessions. This is a great way to get the endorphins going, and I always feel so much better for it (even when it’s so very cold outside).

4. One thing I also want to start as part of my 2022 New Year’s resolutions is journaling. A number of people have recommended this to me for mindfulness, so I am looking forward to starting this as part of my wellbeing routine this year!
