Taiwan Weds 1,773 Same Sex Couples Since Legalising Equal Marriage

In the first month of equal marriage in Taiwan, 790 female couples and 383 male couples have walked down the aisle.

526 took place on the first day alone, May 24.

Marc Yuan and Shane Lin were the first gay couple to be married, with Lin telling Reuters:  “I feel very lucky that I can say this out loud: I am gay and I am getting married.”

Their marriage certificate was signed by Chi Chia-wei,the LGBT+ rights campaigner whose legal challenge led to the Constitutional Court ruling which led to marriage being legalised.

“This is the right that we deserved from a long time ago. I hope Taiwan’s democracy and human rights will have a ripple effect on other countries in Asia,” Chi Chia-wei added.
