Taiwanese School Protests Removal of LGBT+ Children’s Book by Wearing Skirts to Class

A primary school in Taiwan has protested the removal of an LGBT+ children’s book at another school in the country’s capital, Taipei, by wearing skirts to school, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.

Students and staff took part in the protest and photos were shared on Facebook and online, including one of the school’s male Principal wearing a skirt.

The book, written by David Walliams, follows a 12-year-old boy named Dennis. After losing his mother Dennis becomes interested in women’s clothes and with the help of a friend turns up to school in a dress going by the name Denise. Denise then has to navigate the reactions of his friends, family and teachers.

LGBT+ advocacy group, Equal Love TW, praised the school for protesting the removal the book and bringing a spotlight to the issue.

“Every child is one of a kind and education is to enable children to sympathize and tolerate difference, and to appreciate others’ uniqueness,” they said.
