Top Bisexual Musicians and Artists

By Laurine Payet, Music Journalist

Music history is full of bisexual artists. Artists such as David Bowie and Janis Joplin started building the path for bisexuality within music. Helped by the sexual liberation and the better acceptance for queerness, current pop stars and music icons have taken the jobs of bisexual role models. Big names such as Lady Gaga, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Miley Cyrus led a better representation of bisexual peers in the music industry. To mark bisexual visibility day, myGwork are highlighting our current favourite bisexual artists.

Known for her breakthrough album “Perpetual Motion People” released in 2015, Ezra Furman is a famous LGBTQ+ icon in the music scene. As well as being openly bisexual, Furman came out as a transgender woman earlier this year. The singer-songwriter released three albums with Ezra Furman and the Harpoonsbefore her five solo long plays. She has recently found herself writing the soundtrack for the Netflix drama-comedy Sex Education, also famous for its inclusivity.

Also known as Soko, the French singer and actress Stéphanie Sokolinski is to be mentioned. Her raw voice blended with her clouded approach to songwriting make Soko one of the purest sounding artists. Her 2012 LP ‘I Wish I was an Alien’ makes everyone agree on the sexy touch of French accent. After starring in Loie Fuller’s ‘The Dancer’ and giving birth to her child, she came back last year with her latest album ‘Feel Feelings’. She uses the album as a platform to express herself about mental health struggles, looking for queer love and living queer love.

Mostly famous for his work with the band The Internet, publicly bisexual artist Steve Lacy is to watch out. His music is a mix between his lo-fi roots with his band, with a touch of R&B and indie vibes. Lacy’s experience in production gives his groovy music its polished sound. After releasing his debut album ‘Apollo XXI’ in 2019, the songwriter, performer and producer came out with a mixtape during the pandemic. The compilation called ‘The Lo-Fis’ gave Steve Lacy a much wider range of ways to express his musical creativity, making it one of the most interesting records of 2020.

An icon in the lesbian and bisexual community, Phoebe Bridgers has to have been in your rainy day’s playlist already. While her 2017 debut ‘Stranger in the Alps’ gave Bridgers the spotlight she already deserved, it’s her second opus that brought the singer-songwriters where she is now. ‘Punisher’, released last summer, got Phoebe Bridgers nominated in three categories at the Grammy Awards. With the same emo path as ‘Stranger in the Alps’, the new album brings a new indie rock side to the artist’s work.

Korean-American musician, director and author Michelle Zauner is mainly famous for being the frontwoman of Japanese Breakfast. The indie rock band from Philadelphia has been together since 2013, dropping their first breakthrough album ‘Soft Sounds from Another Planet’ three years later. The blend of indie guitars, cloudy synths and soft percussions accompany Zauner’s intense and true voice perfectly. The band came back this year with a new album called ‘Jubilee’. Following their past creative choice, their comeback LP seems more mature and explores different ambiences with tracks such as ‘Be Sweet’, aspiring to be dancefloor masterpieces.

Frank Ocean has to be one of the main bisexual figures in his scene. The artist is famous to be multitalented. From performer, songwriter, producer but also a photographer and visual artist, Frank Ocean is a pioneer in a lot of fields. His debut album ‘channel ORANGE’ was so highly acclaimed that the four-year wait for his next record became a meme in pop culture. Bringing together a variety of sounds, he adds an electronic touch to R&B, rap and spoken words. Ocean plays around with all sorts of samples, making his tracks unique. His 2016 record ‘Blond’ was worth the wait. He has since then teased the release of a new record, dropping singles every few months.

The indie scene would not be what it is now if Clairo had not stepped in with the viral lo-fi single ‘Pretty Girl’ in 2017. Her debut album ‘Immunity’ brought together the LGBTQ+ community and the melancholic indie scene. That year also welcomed her feature in Wallow’s famous ‘Are You Bored Yet?’. She has recently released her second LP ‘Sling’. The critics praised it as much as the first one and is the perfect soundtrack for the upcoming fall.

Artists with a massive influence coming out on a much more regular basis are making bisexuality a lot more visible in the music industry. Popstars but also rappers and rock stars lead the way for bisexuality as well as other queer identities to be represented and accepted. You can find a more exhaustive playlist of our favourite tracks by bisexual artists here:
