Toxicity at work: strategies for handling difficult employees and protecting managerial wellbeing

Toxic employees can have a significant negative impact on team morale, productivity, and overall work environment. As a manager, it is crucial to take a proactive approach to recognize and manage toxic behaviors while also prioritizing the mental well-being of yourself and your team. Here are some ways to manage toxic employees and improve conditions in your workplace.

1. Recognizing toxic behaviors 

Identifying toxic employees in the first place begins with being aware of the common signs. These may include gossiping, negativity, disrespectful behavior towards others, lack of accountability, and constant conflict with colleagues. Pay attention to patterns of behavior that consistently bring down team dynamics and create tension within the workplace. Also, listen to the general consensus of your team – if someone is receiving a lot of complaints, be sure to look into it. 


2. Open communication 

Establishing clear lines of communication with your team is essential for addressing toxic behaviors. Create a safe space where employees feel comfortable expressing their concerns about any disruptive behavior they may be experiencing, whether in a conversation directly with you or in a group meeting. Encourage open dialogue and provide opportunities for honest feedback without fear of repercussions.

Encourage a culture of well-being within your team by promoting work-life balance, providing resources for mental health support, and leading by example in managing stress effectively. 


6. Seeking help 

Recognize when the situation escalates beyond your control and seek guidance from HR or higher management if necessary. Don’t pressure yourself to manage unreasonably difficult scenarios all by yourself. Addressing toxic behaviors sometimes requires additional resources and support to ensure a positive and productive work environment for all employees.
