It’s our tech that enables billions of travel bookings each year and improves travel experiences, from automated baggage drops to retina security scans at airports. We’re good at what we do here in Research & Development (R&D) and we should be. Amadeus invested nearly €900 million in the R&D function in 2018 alone, making us the number one investor in R&D in the travel sector worldwide.

In 2018, we relocated to our R&D Centre of Excellence in Heathrow, where over 400 employees work on live, critical airport and airline applications. We now call a brand new, sustainable, state-of-the-art building along the Heathrow Airport perimeter, home. Amadeus Gatwick, Travel Channels

Our vision is to evolve our platform to incorporate all the relevant content our customers need from any available source. In that way, we create a more personalized, connected and sustainable future for travel, redefining travel distribution to make travel more rewarding. This is a space that is not occupied by our competitors or other technology companies - a space where all players can interact and co-create to deliver better journeys.

We’ve developing a personalized offer across 4 customer segments, Retail Travel Agencies, Online Travel Companies, Business Travel Agencies and Corporations to help our customers succeed. Our technology is open source and host aggregated content from airlines, hotel chains, rail operators and many more to ensure we serve travelers better.

Amadeus Proud

Proud is the official lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) Network in the London office of Heathrow. It aims to make sure that discrimination and harassment of LGBTQ+ staff is tackled and to get up-to-date with current legislation and ensure Amadeus’ policies comply. The Proud Network also identified the additional objective to train the committee and Amadeus staff on how to tackle mental health and well-being issues. It has been proven that the LGBTQ+ community is most likely to suffer from these issues.

Proud launched in February 2019 and so far, the LGBTQ+ committee organized or took part in the following activities:

  • Attended the Imperial College LGBT+ Careers Networking Event
  • Organized for staff to go watch London pride 2019
  • A conference commissioned to study how LGBTQ+ students approach life in University and contact with their first employer, to assist in our aim to create LGBTQ+ inclusive work environment
  • 3rd year supporting the LGBTI+ in workplace summit

The AWN (Amadeus Women’s Network)

This is a global initiative to create a positive influence that motivates, inspires and enables women to develop both professionally and personally with the support of other women and men. Its members aim to offer educational and networking opportunities through meetings, events, workshops and conferences both internally and externally.

The AWN aspires to improve the company’s performance to bridge the equality gap by fostering a broader range of behaviors and by benefitting from the richness of diversity and aims to prepare a better workplace for younger and future generations. The network is extremely active within the Heathrow office of Amadeus with key speakers frequently addressing the network on various topics and engaging in Q&A sessions.

The ASSC (Amadeus Sports and Socials Club)

The ASSC partners with a variety of subsidized sports and social communities welcoming all employees and contractors. These range from badminton and board games clubs to basketball and yoga. They meet frequently and encourage cross-departmental cooperation and friendships formed on mutual interests.

Global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Charity Work

Amadeus’ strategy in social responsibility is to use our core strengths – our people, technology and global travel expertise – in programs and partnerships that can make a real difference. Our objective is to contribute to the inclusive development of communities in the countries where we operate, improving how travel and tourism can make a positive impact.

In 2018 we joined the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, to strengthen our commitment to sustainability and the 10 universal principles on human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption.

We have also continued detailed consultations and run programs together with our key social stakeholders such as UNICEF and the Global Travel and Tourism Partnership (GTTP). We made good progress too in the three strategic pillars of our global Social Responsibility program: Technology for good, knowledge & skills transfer and community support.

With activities taking place globally to mark social volunteering days, employees from the UK offices have been encouraged to take part in an organized event at inner-city farms and forests coppicing trees to allow for new growth and preparing the ground for tree planting.

We also support nominated local charities by holding a variety of fundraising events held at our offices.

Sustainability

Amadeus takes the impact it has on the environment very seriously. Our new home, WBC4, was built from the ground up in 2018 and was designed as an environmentally considerate building. To ensure it achieved a ‘BREEAM Very Good’ rating the following design aspects were included:

  • High efficiency LED lighting throughout with daylight saving around the perimeter
  • Sustainably sourced timbers with FSC certification
  • High efficiency wall and ductwork insulation
  • Low VOC eco-friendly paint finishes
  • Restricted flow devices for the toilets and taps
  • Solar reflective glazing to reduce heat gain in the office
  • Photovoltaic solar panels on the roof feeding straight back into the building electrical systems
  • 19 electric car charging points

We have also invested in changing rooms and showers in our secure underground car park, so employees have great facilities should they choose to cycle or run into work with cycle storage for up to 60 bikes and large lockers for anyone who wants to exercise during the day.

We actively promote recycling at every opportunity and ensure that our waste contractors are zero to landfill. We have dedicated food waste bins in all kitchens and employees can even take a free bag of coffee grounds (bi-product) for composting at home!

One of our biggest achievements to date is signing up to REGO-backed electricity which will ensure that 2020 our electric we will be zero carbon footprint as of our consumption here at WBC4 will be matched by a wind generated renewable source!

Family Friendly Policies

At Amadeus we value work life balance and offer enhanced allowances in relation to family leave to support our employees during life’s big events:

  • Maternity/Adoption/Shared Parental Leave - We offer enhanced pay for 20 weeks at full basic salary
  • Paternity Leave - We offer enhanced pay for 2 weeks at full basic salary
  • First Day at primary school - We support you taking an additional ½ day paid leave to wave your child off on their first day at school
  • Emergency Leave - 5 days paid leave to assist with emergency family care arrangements

Wellbeing at Amadeus

The Wellbeing of our employees is so important to us we have created The Amadeus’ Employee Wellness program – ‘Health, Wellness & You’. It’s based around three pillars; Money, Munch and Mind.

Money - Our employees have access to financial wellbeing advice with tips and tricks as to how to make money go further, budget planners, loan, pension and mortgage calculators.

Mind - All employees have access to yoga and meditation videos. In addition to a selection of onsite wellness events like stretching, sleep clinics, ‘doggy-de-stress’ sessions and bi-monthly on-site massage and meditation slots.

For confidential support, we offer employees assistance through a 24-hour phone counselling service or one-one sessions. In addition, we have just seen our first set of employees successfully complete their Mental Health First Aid training.

We also provide annual onsite flu vaccinations and health checks.

Munch - You’ve guessed it, this bit focuses on nutrition and aims to provide advice, tips and recipe videos for employees to follow. Additionally, our building and facilities team work closely with our onsite subsidized restaurant to promote a range of healthy and filling food and drink options.
