Former New York council speaker calls Cynthia Nixon an “unqualified lesbian”
It’s only been a day and the Sex and the City star has already drawn criticism for her bid for Governor of New York. Yesterday Cynthia Nixon announced her intention to run in a powerful video released online. If elected she would not only be the first openly gay governor of the state but the first woman to ever serve in the role. She is running against current Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primaries and is working with key strategists Bill Hyers and Rebecca Katz.
Former New York City council speaker Christine Quinn, who ran for mayor of the city in 2013, has spoken out against Nixon. Talking to the New York Post she expressed her reservations regarding Nixon’s qualifications: “She’s an accomplished actress, a supporter of political causes and that’s a good thing. Participating in rallies is important. But… being an actress and celebrity doesn’t make you qualified for public office.”
Quinn also mentioned Nixon’s lack of support for her when she ran for mayor: “Cynthia was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now, she wants an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York. She isn’t qualified to be the governor.”
Quinn later took to Twitter to defend her comments, saying: “To be clear, Cynthia Nixon’s identity has no bearing on her candidacy and it was not my intention to suggest it did. I’ve experienced (discrimination) time and time again, and would never support it or condone it.
“As a lesbian who ran one of the most high profile races in the country, I know what that’s like. And I know it’s imperative that we encourage more members of our community to run for office. Cynthia Nixon aggressively opposed my candidacy in New York despite my qualifications for the office and despite my strong progressive credentials.”
Nixon dismissed Quinn’s comments by telling The Post that “her being a lesbian and my being a lesbian” isn’t important.
