Afghanistan LGBTQ+ Appeal: Briefing with Kimahli Powell and Baroness Barker
Time: 13:00 - 14:00 BST
Virtual location: Zoom
In partnership with GiveOut and Rainbow Railroad, Macquarie is proud to be hosting a fundraiser to support LGBTQ+ people under threat in Afghanistan post the recent Taliban takeover.
The Taliban have seized power in Afghanistan following the collapse of the government and LGBTQ+ Afghans will face extreme persecution under the Taliban’s strict interpretation of Sharia law. Many LGBTQ+ people will feel they have no choice but to try to flee.
GiveOut has activated its LGBTQ+ Emergency Fund in response to the emerging crisis which you can read more about here.
100% of the funds donated to this appeal will go to support Rainbow Railroad in their urgent work to help LGBTQ+ Afghan’s at risk. Macquarie will be donating to the appeal and matching all staff donations.
Please join us for a briefing with two guest speakers to discuss the unfolding situation and how you can help.
Kimhali Powell, Executive Director of Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian and US based organisation that helps LGBTQ+ people escape violence and persecution around the world.
Baroness Barker, a member of the House of Lords, Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on LGBT Rights and a GiveOut Trustee.
The event will be introduced by Geff Parsons, co-chair of Macquarie’s Pride Employee Network Group in EMEA and a GiveOut Trustee.
