Just Like Us Calls on LGBTQ+ Young Adults to Share Their Experiences in Vital New Research

LGBTQ+ 18 to 25-year-olds have the chance to be part of vital independent research from Just Like Us, the LGBTQ+ young people’s charity.

The report, due to be published later this year, will look at the experiences of young LGBTQ+ adults in the UK, covering everything from their wellbeing and home life, to their experiences in the world of work, as well as taking into account intersections like faith, race and disability.

LGBTQ+ people aged 18 to 25 can fill out the quick survey here to have their voices heard, and each respondent will have the chance to win one of four £50 Deliveroo vouchers. Non-LGBTQ+ young adults can also fill out the survey.

Just Like Us’ previous research report, Growing Up LGBT+, surveyed pupils aged 11 to 18 as well as more than 500 educators.

The report revealed important findings about LGBTQ+ under-18s, for example that they are twice as likely to feel lonely and worry daily about their mental health. In addition, they were twice as likely to be bullied as their non-LGBTQ+ peers, and one in four (25%) faced daily tensions at home. The report also found a positive link between LGBTQ+ inclusive education in schools and young people having better mental health.

Dominic Arnall, Chief Executive of Just Like Us, says: “Our report into the experiences of 18 to 25-year-olds will be vital in understanding the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ young adults, the issues they care about and the challenges they are facing.

“We know from our previous report, Growing Up LGBTQ+, that LGBTQ+ young people face disproportionate challenges, but the report also showed that sending positive messages of LGBTQ+ acceptance led to better outcomes for all young people.

“This new research will help us understand what needs to be done to improve the wellbeing of young adults, too.”

Billy (he/him), 21, a Just Like Us ambassador in London, said: “We all have the power to add our voices to the data pool on LGBTQ+ identities and experiences, and I believe we should all use that power to make our community and our struggles more visible.”

Bronwyn (she/her), 23, another Just Like Us ambassador from the North East of England, added: “Outcomes from this survey could help employers understand how important it is to support LGBTQ+ young people at university and in the workplace. Speak up, and you can change the future of LGBTQ+ inclusion for the better.”
