Lesbian refugee protests Egypt’s treatment of LGBT+ with belly dancing and a beard

Shrouk El-Attar, a refugee from Egypt and a student at Cardiff University, has found a unique way to protest the treatment of the LGBT+ community in her home country. Performing in drag as the “Dancing Queen” she’s put on shows in France, the Netherlands and Japan. She belly dances with a fake beard to raise money for refugees to afford education in the UK.

Refugees are treated as international students in the UK and are forced to pay triple fees for university. Many refugees can’t even get close to affording that and are unable to get a higher education. Al-Attar initially had to drop out of university because of the rising costs.

“When I was applying for universities there were no universities accepting asylum seekers,” she said. “Now there’s around 60 across the country, and it’s beautiful to see real change happening because of our work.”

While homosexuality is decriminalised in Egypt, gay and bisexual people are still often tried under debauchery laws for illegal same-sex activity.
