Love, Simon Director Says Gay Execs Wouldn’t Let Him Cast Gay Actors

Greg Berlanti, the director of Love, Simon, has told The Hollywood Reporter that it was mainly other gay executives who got in the way of him casting gay actors for straight roles.

“Early on in my career there were gay execs and gay casting people who were the least likely to let me cast an actor they knew was gay in a straight part,” Berlanti said.

“These were the individuals who knew how important it would be.”

Berlanti would not elaborate on which actors and which executives he was talking about, but the director has worked on a number of high-profile US TV shows, including: Arrow, Supergirl, Brothers and Sisters and Dawson’s Creek.

He added that while working on Dawson’s Creek, everybody was tentative about featuring a gay kiss.

“When we did the Jack kiss on Dawson’s Creek, everyone was tentative. But I took over the show, and that was an important thing to me. If we were going to bring the character out, it seemed silly to me that he couldn’t kiss.”
