Practicing Authentic Allyship Initiatives at ABB

Fabrizio Moya Dupre, Country HR Manager Chile & Peru at ABB and Sponsor of the Country Ally Initiative in their LGBTQ+ network, spoke to myGwork about how allies can do their part in creating an inclusive workplace. He also discusses what the definition of an LGBTQ+ ally is to him, and what practices take place at ABB to display such allyship.

Why do you think allies are important?

Allies are crucial in LGBTQ+ inclusion because they amplify voices, educate, create safe spaces, strengthen the movement, influence change, challenge stereotypes, build personal connections, and promote intersectional understanding. Their support helps foster acceptance and equality for the LGBTQ+ community at ABB.

How can allies help create an inclusive workplace?

Allies create an inclusive workplace within ABB by educating themselves, challenging discrimination, supporting policies, advocating for training, offering reverse mentorship, and promoting a diverse and respectful culture. Their actions help ensure that LGBTQ+ colleagues feel valued and respected.

What does it mean for you to be an ally?

Being an ally within ABB means actively supporting and advocating for the inclusion, rights, and well-being of marginalized groups, particularly the LGBT+ community. It involves using one's privilege and influence to create a safe, respectful, and equitable workplace for all. An ally listens, learns, speaks up against discrimination, promotes understanding, and works to dismantle barriers to ensure that every employee at ABB, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels valued and empowered to succeed.

When and why did you choose to join the LGBTQ+ community in its fight for equality?

At ABB, the decision to join the LGBTQ+ community in its fight for equality is a reflection of a commitment to a just and inclusive society where everyone can live their lives authentically and without fear of discrimination.

What is an LGBTQ+ ally?

As we all might know, Allies are typically individuals who do not identify as LGBTQ+ themselves, but stand in solidarity with the community, using their privilege and influence to promote acceptance and equality. At ABB, we, as allies, work collectively to create a more inclusive and understanding environment by challenging discrimination, educating ourselves and others, and actively supporting policies and practices that ensure equal treatment for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Everyone is warmly invited to become an ally at ABB.
