Protests in New York mark one year anniversary of gay purges in Chechnya

Activist organisation Voices4 gathered in New York to protest the detainment and persecution of LGBT+ people in Chechnya, as well as the lack of media coverage surrounding the events. It was a year ago that news broke of gay men being rounded up, killed and tortured by authorities in Chechnya, an Islamic autonomous region of Russia. There has still yet to be any formal criminal investigation issued form the Kremlin, and many of the victims of the purge are still missing.

Protestors gathered around Columbus Circle and included Adam Eli, Voices 4 founder, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Milk, YouTube personality Tyler Oakley, local drag performer Marti Gould Cummings, and musician Zeke Thomas.

Voices4 is demanding that visas be granted to LGBT people who have escaped Chechnya seeking asylum, as well as demanding the Trump administration step in and take action.
