Internship in Sustainable Polymer Materials (80-100%)


ABB Corporate Research, in close collaboration with ABB businesses, develops the foundations for the next generation of ABB products. The Materials team at ABB’s Swiss research center in the proximity of Zurich focuses on the development and manufacturing of innovative materials to be implemented in the company’s next generation of products. We are currently offering outstanding students the chance to join our multidisciplinary team of researchers in the field of sustainable, recycled and bio-based polymer materials. In the frame of a six-month internship scheduled to start in August 2024, you will be able to put theory into practice by contributing to one of our projects related to future energy technologies. Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to current technology development projects focusing on innovative thermoplastic and thermoset polymers
  • Material formulation and processing at the laboratory scale
  • Characterization of physical, mechanical, electrical, and aging properties of the recycled and sustainable polymer materials
  • Analysis of experimental data, technical discussion, and presentation of results to the project team to understand structure-property relations
  • Literature and laboratory exploration of possible chemical recycling methods for thermoset materials, and environmental aging mechanisms of thermoplastic and thermoset materials
  • Support in service-related activities for the local ABB business units

Your background

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Materials Science/Engineering or a related discipline (completion of at least six semesters); official enrollment is essential
  • Broad understanding of polymer materials
  • Specific knowledge in polymers is of advantage
  • Experience in laboratory work and know-how in experimental methods
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated mindset and ability to work independently
  • Highly conscientious individual with a keen sense of responsibility
  • Fluent command of English, both written and spoken
