Software Development Manager, Alexa Smart Home - Voice Experience
DESCRIPTION:
Alexa Smart Home Voice Experience is hiring a Software Development Manager (SDM) to lead a team of skilled engineers working to enable the next generation of Alexa voice experiences powered by Generative AI.
The Voice Experience team is focused on making Alexa the voice-activated user interface for the home. From the simplest voice commands (turn on the lights, turn down the thermostat) to use cases spanning home security and home organization, we are evolving Alexa into an intelligent, indispensable companion that can understand what customers want it to do, without the needs for strict phrasing or burdensome manual set up.
As a manager on the Voice Experience Team, you'll be responsible for the development and expansion of the systems API layers which enable the Smart Home's core business logic for new voice workflows. You will lead and expand the team, manage performance, and shepherd the careers of your direct reports. Your excellent communication and technical skills will be used to sharpen technical solutions, establish clear priorities, and drive high quality work.
Key job responsibilities
- Drive the technical direction and architecture of complex software systems
- Manage a development team focused on creating back-end infrastructure
- Work closely with a diverse group of stakeholders including Product Managers, Data Engineers, Applied Scientists, internal technical teams and leadership to drive end-to-end solutions and engineering roadmap.
- Provide technical expertise and leadership throughout product life cycles, influence software engineers best practices for your team and own operational excellence of production services
- Hire, coach, and mentor individuals
A day in the life
As Software Development Manager on the Alexa Smart Home Voice Experiences team you will lead the development of highly-visible products and services for the smart home. Your work will span working with Product leaders and Designers to define the customer experience for new voice user interfaces, leading the architecture, roadmap, and operations for the cloud services that enable those interfaces, and collaborating with scientists and security engineers to ensure those interfaces are reliable, safe, and secure. And, you will have the satisfaction of working on a product your friends and family can relate to, and want to use every day.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- 7+ years of engineering experience
- 5+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Experience in engineering team management
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $148,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
