Principal Architect

We are the Protections (Trust) Engineering Team in eBay’s Payments Organization, responsible for building seller and buyer post sale experiences (Cancel, Returns, Item-Not-Received and Payment Disputes). Our team is also responsible for other products including Seller Standards, Feedback and Service metrics. As a self-motivated and enthusiastic member of our team, you will work with extremely hardworking engineers, PM and Business partners in a fun environment building world class customer experiences.

Job responsibilities:
  • Work with a team of engineers, product managers and UX designers to define, own and implement the architecture of various products and systems.

  • Lead the discovery phase of medium to large projects to present a high-level design and implement prototypes.

  • Functionally deconstruct sophisticated problems into simple, straight-forward solutions that demonstrate significant creativity and high judgment.

  • Fully and completely understand system interdependencies, trade offs, and limitations.

  • Possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering standard methodologies.

  • Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.

  • Be up to date with the latest in the industry and apply those to internal architecture in the areas of mobile, web and large-scale data processing applications.

  • Develop technical & domain expertise and apply to solving product challenges.

  • Collaborate effectively with engineering teams and architects across multiple domains and multiple geographies, to come up with right system integrations.

  • Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members.

Required Qualifications:

  • Preferred Master's degree in computer science, or equivalent experience.

  • 15+ years of relevant engineering experience leading the delivery of rich customer experiences, services and large-scale distributed systems, with 4+ years in an architect role

  • Experience building rich user interfaces for mobile (native) and/or web based applications.

  • Experience delivering Microservices based architecture.

  • Solid working knowledge of mobile application (iOS and Android) design considerations.

  • Strong advocacy of automated testing, continuous delivery, and software quality across the software development life-cycle.

  • Experience building cloud native applications.

  • Strong customer focus, excellent communication and relationship building skills. Ability to frame a problem clearly and meaningfully.

  • Experience mentoring/training a broad engineering community on sophisticated technical issues.

  • Excellent understanding of web technologies, distributed systems and service-oriented architecture along with web services and related standards like REST/JSON.

  • Solid understanding of Java, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, Spring, NoSQL and SQL databases.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with big data solutions such as Kafka, Flink, Hadoop, Spark, etc.

  • Experience working with ML pipelines and products.
