The role

The Principal of Inorganic Strategy will help implement eBay global inorganic strategy, partnering with and advising eBay's C-level executives, business leaders and functional partners, to unlock value and drive significant new growth opportunities globally.

Reporting to Director of Inorganic strategy, this role will partner cross-functionally with Strategy, Analytics, Corporate Development, CVC, Product & Engineering, Markets, Marketing, and other internal teams, to build cases and drive end to end inorganic strategy formulation and execution, influencing how eBay grows and innovates in the future. In addition, this person will take a pivotal role in ongoing evaluation, and development of inorganic opportunities.

The Principal of Inorganic Strategy will have a demonstrated track record of implementing inorganic growth strategies, demonstrating excellent business insight and strategic prowess. This role will play a critical part in driving inorganic initiatives at eBay.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Play a significant role in relevant aspects of the inorganic strategy, including development of inorganic approach per category, relevant pipeline generation, screening and assessment, financial model building, as well as partner with Corporate Development on pipeline execution (incl. initial rationale/pitch, evaluation/DD and financial analysis), closing activities and post-close monitoring
  • Lead market and competitive research, synthesize findings, and work with senior members to propose recommendations that help shape inorganic approach
  • Facilitate discussions with cross-functional teams together to identify focus areas for inorganic efforts, evaluate potential opportunities, assess how inorganic strategy can support business initiatives and drive overall audience, GMV, and brand goals, and make strategic recommendations
  • Source and maintain an active pipeline of potential inorganic opportunities for eBay's while keeping close ties with eBay executives and key partners (e.g., Corporate Development, Corporate Venturing)
  • Build investment memo for select targets which include industry landscape, investment thesis, target highlights, financial models of target and alliances, risks and mitigations, structuring recommendations
  • Present findings / insights / investment recommendations to partner teams and contribute to alignment creation with senior management
  • Contribute to improving the Inorganic Strategy team by enhancing existing processes and recruiting and mentoring new team members

Job Requirements:

  • MBA or other advanced degree from a top tier university
  • 7+ years' experience at a top-tier company in investment banking, corporate development, private equity, or management consulting. Experience with consumer internet is a plus
  • Excellent analytic, problem solving, and communication skills coupled with strong self-motivation and a high level of work ethic. Experienced in building financial models and investment memos
  • Strong track record of leading complex inorganic initiatives and end-to-end execution experience
  • Well networked, with strong relationships within consumer technology communities, and potentially start-up community
  • Proven ability to think creatively and strategically while handling complex issues
  • Team player with proven success in partnering with cross functional teams, senior business leaders, direct reports and global colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, present and influence credibly and effectively at all levels of the organization.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

$144,000 - $216,150

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
