Associate Director, Therapeutic Area Communications & Patient Advocacy - Inflammation

Job Description

The Position

This role is responsible for delivering strategic branded and unbranded communication programmes and patient advocacy engagement for Gilead’s growing inflammation portfolio, including treatments in development for rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The position works closely with cross-functional and Public Affairs colleagues at the global, regional and country levels.

Job duties include:

  • Setting inflammation communications strategy to help establish Gilead as a leader in inflammation in the ACE region, in alignment with global direction and local market input
  • Identifying/creating targeted thought leadership opportunities for Gilead’s therapeutic area leadership
  • Shaping the product launch communications and advocacy engagement plans for Gilead’s lead compound under EMA review for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in ACE markets where Gilead has commercialisation rights, providing support for the implementation of country-level activities
  • Communicating data and regulatory milestones that demonstrate the advancement of Gilead’s inflammation product pipeline
  • Designing and implementing disease awareness programmes that inform and engage patients
  • Developing compelling materials to support external communications, including key messages, Q&A documents, press releases, presentations, videos, social media content, etc.
  • Responding to media requests and coordinating interviews with Gilead spokespeople and opinion leader spokespeople, as appropriate
  • Developing/strengthening relationships with a wide variety of community advocates, media and other influential organisations
  • Continuously scanning the environments to proactively identify and manage issues Coordinating with cross-functional colleagues to ensure alignment and collaboration in strategic priorities and messaging across different stakeholders
  • Understanding the regulatory frameworks in the region and managing internal approvals and interactions with reviewers
  • Managing agency partners

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Global or pan-EU experience in product PR, media and advocacy
  • Ability to understand and accurately communicate complex science
  • Demonstrated experience in media relations (traditional and social), issues management; knowledge of healthcare and industry media and reporting trends
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations and principles specific to communications for a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience managing multiple projects (timelines, budgets, priorities) simultaneously; flexibility and results-oriented focus are essential 
  • Ability to interact with senior management and high-profile experts appropriately, with confidence and ease
  • Ability to give formal presentations to internal and external audiences of various sizes
  • Experience working successfully with patient organisations
  • Fluency in English 
  • Typically requires a BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field (or International Equivalent) proven relevant experience, which includes solid healthcare public relations experience
  • Experience in inflammation or a highly competitive therapeutic area is preferred but not essential
