13,700 Trans Military Service People Will Lose Their Jobs Today
President Donald Trump’s ban on trans people serving in the military begins today, and an estimated 13,700 service people will lose their jobs, according to the Palm Center.
More than 18 percent of all trans people have serviced in the military, according to the 2015 US Trans Survey (USTS)– which makes it the largest single employer of trans people in the United States.
“The military is the largest employer in the nation and, as the USTS found, transgender people are twice as likely to have served in the Armed Forces as the general population,” explains Gillian Bransetter, media relations manager for the National Center for Transgender Equality.
Since 2016, when Trump first announced his intention to enforce a ban, it is estimated that nearly 15,000 trans people have enlisted in the military.
From today, any trans person who comes out as trans, or is ousted as trans, will be discharged unless they agree to live as their assigned gender.
“It is indefensible that Trump’s ban on Transgender troops is being implemented on Friday,” tweeted conservative political commentator Meghan McCain.
“This discriminatory policy will lead Transgender service members, patriots who have decided to serve their nation, to live in the shadows.
“It’s an unfair, un-American, and dangerous policy.”
