A Day in the Life of WTW's Luis Carlos Cortés Ruiz
Interviews
In this week’s 'A Day in the Life of...' interview, WTW's Luis Carlos Cortés Ruiz provides insight into his role as Global Management Information Analyst.
Hi Luis, can you tell us a bit about your role and how you got here?
I gather, analyze, and deliver management information across WTW’s Insurance Consulting and Technology business. This enables upper management to get a full picture of the business and make better decisions, as I manage data from finance, sales, people, and innovation.
I started looking for a data-related position
just out of college and found the job posting for this role on LinkedIn. I went
through a series of interviews and, after getting the offer, I accepted as I
was keen to work in an international environment where I could make an impact.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Every day is a bit different, but I produce
reports about the business using spreadsheets, programming languages and
specialized software. I then send the reports to relevant people, answer their
questions, and listen to their feedback. I also allocate the workload across my
team and collaborate with them to improve our reporting.
What part of your role do you enjoy the
most?
I enjoy being able to coordinate the
members of my team, as I try to get the best out of their skills and interests to
deliver high quality information.
Which top three skills are vital for this
role and why?
1.- Creativity – we need to be on the
lookout for opportunities of enhancement and automation of the reports we
produce
2.- Programming – as our reports get more
technically advanced, it’s important to automate the production process, as
well as find more ways to extract insights
3.- Communication – it’s imperative to
listen incisively to stakeholders to know what they want, as it is equally
vital that we know how to present our findings
What’s the most challenging aspect of your
role?
Being able to understand the needs of the
business across the globe – what one region needs might seem different from
other regions, but we ultimately strive to deliver fewer reports with richer,
more useful information to everyone.
How do you help others feel like they
belong in your team/promote inclusion?
I try to assign work based on proven skills
and interests, so that everyone can perform at their best. Out of my team, I’m
part of the LGBT+ leadership committee of WTW Mexico and actively participate
in initiatives that make the company a safer place to work, in addition to
contributing to the successful bid to get Human Rights Campaign’s Best Place to
Work recognition for the company’s country branch. I’m extremely glad to be a part
of this, as it’s the first time we obtain this important recognition, and proud
to work in a company that celebrates diversity.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself with a master’s degree, being
the leader of a wide and diverse team working on a data or actuarial related
area. I would also like to reside in a foreign country.
