A Doctor In Turkmenistan Has Gone Missing After Coming Out
A twenty-four-year-old doctor in Turkmenistan, namely Kasymberdy Garayev, has gone missing after detailing his life being gay in a country where being LGBT+ is illegal. The young doctor was summoned to a police station, along with his family, and has vanished ever since ‘Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty’ reported.
“Garayev described the massive pressure he was under from both his family and officials in Turkmenistan, where being gay is punishable by up to 2 years in prison,” the article states.
Garayev also said that only members of his family knew about his sexual orientation and they tried to “help” him by trying to forcibly marry him in arranged marriages, by seeking counseling from psychiatrists and imams and by suggesting he “sleep with a prostitute to become a "real" man”.
On October 24, he went to a police station after being summoned.
It was the last time he was heard from.
