Adoption Agencies In Tennessee Are Now Legally Covered To Discriminate Against Gay Couples
Adoption agencies in Tennessee are now protected by law if they choose to discriminate against same-sex couples. The controversial measure was passed by lawmakers in Tennessee and the bill declares that adoption agencies can refuse to participate in a child placement if doing so would “violate the agency’s written religious or moral convictions or policies.”
The bill also prohibits the state from “denying an agency's license or grant application for public funds because of the group's refusal to place a child with a family based on religious objections. The adoption agency would also be protected from lawsuits for such a refusal,” as reported by ‘USA Today’.
Eight other states in the U.S. have passed similar legislation.
A statewide LGBT+ advocacy group, namely The Tennessee Equality Project, has opposed the bill, arguing that the result will be longer wait times for children to be placed into homes.
