Kansas to make it legal for adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples
The Kansas Senate passed a bill at the end of
last week that will essentially make it legal for adoption agencies to
discriminate against same-sex couples. The bill passed 25-15 after being
approved by the House 63-58. It is now waiting to be signed into law by
Governor Jess Colyer.
Religious adoption agencies will now be able
to claim a religious-based objection as a justifiable reason for not placing
children with a couple.
“Catholic Charities and other adoption agencies
are key to the fabric of our communities. I look forward to signing this bill
because it increases the opportunities for needy children to find loving
homes,”
said Colyer on Friday.
Senator
Steve Fitzgerald told press this law was necessary to stop the “homosexual
agenda.”
JoDee Winterhof of the Human Rights Campaign has greatly criticised the bill: “This insidious bill will make it harder for kids to find qualified loving homes and it could be used to discriminate against LGBTQ Kansans. Business leaders, child welfare advocates, faith leaders and ordinary Kansans have all spoken out against this bill because they understand that needless, discriminatory bills only serve to harm Kansans and the reputation of the Sunflower State.”
