Anti-Gay Hecklers Interrupt Pete Buttigieg Event
Openly gay Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg was interrupted by several anti-gay protestors at an event he was hosting in Texas.
Buttigieg was speaking at the Dallas County Democratic Party’s annual Johnson Jordan dinner on May 3rdwhen several hecklers shouted homophobic slogans at him.
“Pete Buttigieg has been interrupted four times here in Dallas by protesters. One yelled ‘Marriage is between a man and a woman!’ Another yelled ‘Repent!'” wrote CNN reporter DJ Judd, who was attending the event.
Juddsaid Buttigieg only addressed the protestors once he was heckled for a fourth time when he said: “I’m thinking of that scripture that says blessed and do not curse.”
He then referenced his deployment to Afghanistan “for the purpose of defending that gentleman’s freedom of speech.”
Beto O’Rourke, another presidential hopeful, tweeted his support for Buttigieg, writing: “Texans don’t stand for this kind of homophobia and hatred. Mayor Pete, we are grateful you came to Texas and hope to see you and Chasten back again soon.”
