Berlin Memorial to Gay Victims of Nazis Has Been Vandalized
The concrete memorial, called Denkmal für die im Nationalsozialismus verfolgten Homosexuellen (translated to Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism) has been painted over.
Nazi Germany had declared homosexuality an aberration that threatened the German race and sent thousands of gays to concentration camps.
The memorial, located just a short walk from the memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, features a small opening through which visitors can see a video of a same-sex couple kissing.
Police currently have no suspects and wouldn’t reveal if there was surveillance of the crime.
The memorial opened on May 2008 and it was designed by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset.
