As part of Pride Month, we’re shining a spotlight on our colleagues who are playing a key role in shaping HCA UK’s approach to LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusion as members of the #HCAUK Pride Group.

Today we share some words from Darren, Head of HR Operation, Group Well-Being Lead and our Pride Chair, pictured here with his partner of 18 years.

“At HCA UK we are always working to create a inclusive culture and diverse workplace that encourages colleagues to be their best selves at work. We provide a range of services, support programmes and we are committed to supporting everyone on their own journeys.

“Pride month offers a chance to reflect and the HCA UK Pride group has been an open and supportive forum for sharing stories and encouraging allyship.

“When I first came out at the age of 16 Pride was about actioning change, as at that time it was illegal to be gay, and all I wanted was to be me. That’s all, simply to be able to be myself and not feel ashamed of who I was.

"Change did come, albeit it slowly.

“Now Pride month for me is about celebrating how far we have come, but also acknowledging how far we have to go. It's about remembering those we have lost and those that didn’t have the freedom I do as a gay man now.

“I’m proud to say I work for a company that allows me to be myself and embraces me for who I am.” - Darren
