Cruise ship company pledges resources to overturn same-sex marriage ban in Bermuda

Carnival Cruises, one of the biggest cruise ship companies in the world, has pledged to put resources into fighting the ban on same-sex marriages in Bermuda. The company has over 24 registered ships in Bermuda, which means same-sex couples cannot get married on board – not even in international waters.

The company – which also owns Cunard, Princess and P&O Cruises – has teamed up with local LGBT+ group OUTBermuda to launch a legal appeal against the new law. The company has also started lobbying other travel companies to do the same.

‘As a company committed to equality, inclusion and diversity… our engagement includes providing OUTBermuda with financial, civic and public relations support,’ the company said in a statement.

Jamison Firestone, a human rights lawyer, originally lobbied Carnival Cruises to act on the issue and is pleased to see movement: ‘I wish Carnival Cruises and OUTBermuda success in righting this injustice… Carnival must bring significant pressure to bear on the government of Bermuda, including the promise to register its ships elsewhere if the law is not overturned. Staying registered in Bermuda if the legal appeal fails would be a betrayal.’
