Denmark Withdraws Aid Money for Tanzania Following Gay Purge Reports

Tanzania has reportedly lost $10 million in aid money following reports the country is attempting to round up and imprison gay people.

The so-called “gay purge” was reported earlier this month. Dar es Salaam governor Paul Makonda was attempting to create a team to hunt down gay men, subjecting them to cruel anal testing to determine their sexual orientation. Those who are convicted of homosexuality face life in prison.

In response, Denmark has announced it would be cutting their planned aid money to the African country.

“I’m very concerned about the negative development in Tanzania,” wrote Danish development minister Ulla Tørnæs on Twitter.

“Most recently, the unacceptable homophobic statements from a commissioner. Respect for human rights is of paramount importance for Denmark.”
