Ensuring an Open Work Environment for LGBTQ+ People

“Inclusion is also something that needs to be celebrated and supported day in, day out, not just at certain points during the year.”

Caroline Barber, Global Program Manager for Inclusive Recruitment at WTW, spoke to myGwork about how organizations can ensure that all employees feel comfortable to be themselves, and to inspire an open work environment. She also describes what allyship means to her, and the value that comes with educating herself.

Can you please introduce yourself and describe your role within your organization?

I’m Caroline Barber, and I’m the Global Program Manager for Inclusive Recruitment at WTW. The purpose of my role is to fully embed our Inclusive Recruitment strategy and to come up with new initiatives and ideas to attract and hire more diverse talent.

What are some tips you would give someone who wants to be a better ally?

Education is key. I’m always looking for new ways of learning more about the LGBTQ+ community and not being afraid of asking questions. I’ve also found that attending various events such as WorkPride is invaluable as it enables you to attend a large range of sessions in respect of different subjects. Knowledge really is empowering where allyship is concerned!

How do you think organizations can ensure everyone feels comfortable to be themselves in the workplace?

I think that colleague inclusion networks have a huge part to play here. These form an integral part of the culture at WTW, and the support from senior leadership demonstrates how important this is to us as an organization. Inclusion is also something that needs to be celebrated and supported day in, day out, not just at certain points during the year.

What does allyship look like to you?

For me, one of the most important things is educating myself, not relying on the community to do this for me. It’s also about showing support and advocacy whilst remaining authentic. Finally, speaking out and being visible is crucial to being an active ally. Actions speak louder than words.
