A gay married couple in Poland has become the first-ever same-sex couple to appear in an ad in the conservative country. The couple are the same men who made headlines in April when they handed out rainbow masks early in the coronavirus pandemic in the Eastern European nation.
The ad for Durex condoms features different couples in physically intimate moments, one of them being same-sex couple Jakub and Dawid Mycek-Kwiecinski.
The airing of the ad is considered a historic moment for queer representation in the deeply conservative country of Poland. Jakub Mycek-Kwiecinski was a presenter at one of Poland’s national broadcasters TVP for nine years before he was fired for being gay, and while the couple were handing out Pride masks, the country considered a 'Stop Pedophilia' bill that educators and critics called a dangerous attack on LGBT+ rights, disguised as attempts to 'protect vulnerable young people'.
In 2019, 80 towns in Poland declared that they were LGBTQ-free zones, a move that the European Union condemned.
As the ‘Advocate’ reports, the ad is being aired on main channels throughout Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Lithuania.
